PICO

Commissioned by Fayal Coal-Horta Faial. At the age of 23, Jose Silva Melo designed and with a crew of with men build the Pico within an 6 month period.

With the launching of the Pico, Jose Silva Melo established in himself, as the youngest Shipwright in the Azores.

Mestre Joao Albert das Neves, a known Shipbuilder of Santo Amaro Pico, refers to the methods and techniques utilized in the design and building of the Pico, “ during that time Mestre Jose Melo did things, that were only seen and done, some thirty year later.
